Laura Young gave us a fascinating talk with a lively Q and A session afterwards on Debunking the Myth of the Starving Artist. Flipping the script on the idea that artists are crummy with money, how current labor and income data does a terrible job at collecting accurate financial narratives of creative folks, and a call to action for culturally competent and intergenerational financial literacy in order to increase diverse voices in the arts.
Laura Young (she/they) is the Director of Enrollment Management at the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. They have presented extensively on visual and performing arts college admissions at local, regional, and national levels for students, families, counselors, school districts, and non-profit organizations, and were recognized by the National Association for College Admission Counseling with the Rising Star Award for their efforts. Young received their BA in Studio Art at UCLA and their Master of Education at USC.
Genius Teatime was conceived by Pamela Samuelson of Embodywork LA and A. Laura Brody of Opulent Mobility. We ask folks what they can give a talk on for 40 minutes without prep or notes, and they deliver talks full of wonderful information and community spirit! This talk benefited The Art Prof, Lineage Performing Arts Center, and the Opulent Mobility accessibility fund.
The full video is below and the edited transcript is after that Transcripts are behind the paywall, but please get in touch if the fee causes hardship! I am truly happy to share. (Besides, that way I get to know you a little better, which is awesome.)
Laura Brody Hi, and welcome to Genius Teatime with Laura Young. Thank you so much for joining us. In Laura's own words, Laura Young (she/they) is the director of enrollment management at the UCLA school of arts and architecture. They have presented extensively on Visual and Performing Arts College admissions at local, regional, and national levels for students, families, counselors, school districts, and non-profit organizations. They were recognized by the National Association for College Admission Counseling with the Rising Star Award for these efforts. Young received their BA in studio art at UCLA and their masters of education at USC. Thank you so much for joining us, Laura, and this is great, and do you want to talk to us about the Art Prof and the Lineage Performing Arts Center which are the organizations we're going to be sponsoring with this talk.
Laura Young
Yes, so the Art Prof is an online visual arts resource that was designed to support students who wanted to make art, and maybe just had a piece of paper and a pencil. So it's super inclusive, doesn't require you to have any kinds of materials, but really is a creative community to learn about how to make art, connect to other young people who love to make art, and get ready for art school if you want to do that kind of a thing.
Laura Brody Neat.
Laura Young And then the Lineage Performing Arts Center is in Pasadena, California, and it's a full-service performing arts place, and specifically they do some really lovely movement work with the disabled community, and one of my very, my oldest friend from grade school is their executive director, so that's my personal connection to the place.
Laura Brody That is great. Thank you, and do you want to tell everyone, the world about your sock monkey, telling us to keep it tea (laugh) and get us started.
